News Article : Abu Dhabi Run & Awards
Published: 19/11/2014 by : Simon Morillas

So we've finally made it to the end of another F1 season, and what a season it has been! Although it still feels like the summer break was just a few weeks ago, with the Abu Dhabi race around the corner all thoughts are now on the Championship decider…and I'm not just talking about the Drivers’ Championship. Looking at the RunThatTrack Championships page there are some pretty closely fought battles that can still be decided on Saturday night.

While some Championships are still to be decided, some have already been well and truly concluded. Mercedes' Georg Nolte has taken the F1 Points Championship in a commanding manner, Sky Sports' Andrew Ferrans has been extremely busy and claimed the Most Laps, Distance and Calories Championships and Red Bull's Jonathan Wheatley takes the coveted UBS Cup Award. Looking at the Teams’ Championships, it's still a close a battle between FOM, Mercedes, McLaren and Caterham for the top spots. It really is too close to call and will simply be a matter of which team wants it the most, remember every lap counts....

So, given that we still have a few titles to decide, and that it's the final race of the season, we've decided to go out with a bang and hold the final Group Run of the year on Saturday night. To add a bit more razzle to the occasion, it's our first Group Run to be held at night time under lights!

So, yep, it's Group Run time for the final time of 2014. By now you all know the drill, we’ll get together on the Start/Finish line at 9:30pm (just after parc fermé starts) for a 9:45pm start under lights. Our organising team from UBS and JMI will be trackside to get the Group Run underway however sadly for this event we'll be missing some of our friends with Marussia unfortunately not making the final race. Our RunThatTrack and Marussia supporting MESL man on the ground Tom Graham will also be absent come Saturday evening.

I'm sure you all know Tom, he's been part of the F1 paddock for more years than he's probably happy to admit to, and for the past 3 years has been the official trackside representative of RunThatTrack. When my own F1 adventures took me away from the track, I looked for a replacement who could carry on the RunThatTrack duties with the style, humour and passion they deserved and I think Tom has raised the game considerably. RunThatTrack 2014 would not have been possible without Tom's involvement, and I know he is especially gutted to miss the final Group Run of the year, so I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a big thanks to Tom, on behalf of us all, for all that he has done as part of the RunThatTrack team.

While we're thanking people, I'd also like to once again send a big thanks to UBS and especially Bjoern Waespe. While it's the runners that make RunThatTrack, it's the involvement and support of UBS that make it special. We all run for different reasons but I think that knowing every lap helps raise donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation adds a purpose that we would not have been possible without Bjoern and his team at UBS. I'd like to ask each one of you reading this, that if you happen to spot Bjoern or anyone from UBS in the paddock, stop and say hello and help pass on the thanks for another great season. This season thanks to UBS we have raised over $250,000, crossed the magic $1 Million mark in total donations and completed over to 15,000 laps since our little RunThatTrack journey began.

Following our final Group Run, we'll be holding our traditional end of season Award Ceremony. Tradition dictates that we stink up the Paddock Club post Group Run, and I'm sure this year will be no different. Drinks and food will be served and t-shirts and awards handed out. We've also managed to get a special guest for the ceremony, so your attendance is requested. Is there a better way to start a Saturday evening in Abu Dhabi? Get it in the diary now.

So, that’s about it for another year. I’m sure as always I have forgotten someone or something, but with that it's just left for me to say the customary Group Run sign-off, "It does not matter if you win or lose, it's just the taking part that matters, so come on down to the Start/Finish line on Saturday night, have some fun and help raise the donation total for the Make-A-Wish Foundation". Until then, enjoy the weekend and look forward to Saturday night.

Cheers,

Simon Morillas
